this game is over. >> it came down to the wire. the niners so close in their quest for six, but in the end, the team came up short against the seahawks. die hard fans are still showing off their pride tonight as they wait for the team to return to 49ers' headquarters. and here is a live look from the airport in san jose where the team just arrived a few minutes ago. you see the buses there, that's where they are loading up and going back to headquarters. good evening. i'm ama dates. we have team coverage. sports anchor mike shumann is live in seattle. first, lilian kim is live in santa clara where the team is arriving home tonight. hi, lilian. >> hi, ama. the 49ers should be arriving

soon, and waiting for them are dozens of fans here to give the team a warm welcome home. it was not the outcome they hoped for. they say they are proud of the 49ers for a hard-fought game and a great season. these fans are familiar with the team. they know they will be arriving by bus from san jose mineta international. while the fans usually don't get much more than a hand waive from the players they say it is important to be here to show their support and express their appreciation for a job well done. sure they are feeling depressed and down after a tough game and a tough end to a game. what better way to come home than to all of us cheering them on? that's what they need. >> it is a final chance to show our appreciation to the team. it has been a good season and final game notwithstanding. they have given us some great thrills and a lot of fun. we are here to say thank you. >> i could have wished for a much better outcome, but going from where we had been for so

the plane. larry beil is here and this was a tough loss for them. >> it was a tough loss. it is nice to see the fans out there. we are coming toward midnight. they could be sitting at home depressed like everyone, but they are out there. give credit to the faithful. it did sting though. they could not hold the early 10-point lead and the seahawks come back to win it. it was a ruckus crowd. up 17-13 and seahawks roll the dice and russell wilson enducing an off sides jump by the 9ers and throws the deep ball for the touchdown. seahawks go up 20-17. 30 seconds left and sherman tips the kaepernick pass that was intended for crabtree. it ends with an interception by malcolm smith. kap had three fourth quarter turnovers and that was the difference. the seahawkers are super bowl

bound. abc7 news mike shumann is live and tough to overcome the turnovers. >> no question, larry. we have a similar feeling here that we had last year in new orleans. a loss, a throw to michael crabtree of the same corner of the same end zone and it was tough to take. afterwards as you mentioned, kap had three turnovers in the 40 quarter and you won't beat anybody in an nfc title game and he put it on his shoulders. >> i didn't play good enough to win. i turned it over three times and that cost the win. >> congratulations to seattle. they made big plays and we made big plays. it was a 15-round fight right down to the last. >> losing always hurts. i mean, i can't do nothing about it. i tried to do what i could. i made my plays when my number was called. at the end of the game it was

>> it all looked so promising as the niners were on their scoring drive trying to win the game and then the interception. what was exciting became excruciating as the fans waited for the inevitable. >> pretty disappointed in how the game ended. i don't know why we went for it on that play to go for the end zone. we were driving. it is a rough loss. >> hundreds of fans packed the park at 11th and division to watch the game. tv screens were sprinkled among the food trucks where people normally stop to grab lunch or dinner. when the game ended he went for one of the trucks and perhaps hoping for comfort food. >> does it make you feel better? >> the food, no. there ain't no food that can make me feel better about that loss. >> the crowds left quietly, celebrations on hold until one other time. >> it is all right. next year. it is all right. we will stay positive.

72 at oakland. it was 65 in san francisco. numerous 70s in the north bay. napa 70 as well as santa rosa. and real quickly here is a look at current readings. it is getting cold in the north bay with novato right now 39 degrees. we will have some subtle changes coming up this workweek. we will look at my accu-weather seven-day forecast. >> thank you. new at 11:00, the varsity basketball coach at a north bay high school has been fired after a hazing incident. according to the san francisco chronicle two players from wood sigh high were beaten, gaged, duct taped to chairs and had their faces painted with lipstick. this is said to have happened during a post christmas tournament trip to the town of newton. the boys' family are considering legal action. police are looking for the suspects after a deadly double shooting in oakland. it happened near 100th avenue and mcarthur boulevard. they responded to reports of gunfire and found a car with two people inside on multiple

gunshot wounds. both died at the scene. two people are hospitalized in san francisco with injuries suffered in an a injury on turk street. they found one victim at 9:10 and then found the other victim four blocks away. a suspect has been arrested. new at 11:00, a lawsuit has been filed in that road rage incident in new york when bikers swarmed a family in an suv. he is suing new york city and two off duty police officers who were on motorcycles last september. he accuses the city of negligence in training police officers. he wants $75,000 for each of the family members in the car. still to come on abc7 news at 11:00, the new security scare, but this one doesn't involve shopping. instead military personnel targeted. we'll tell you what was uncovered. and a new reason to get your taxes done as soon as possible this year. why your money could already be gone before you get around to filing.

ride from san jose to san francisco commemorates the 54 miles from selma to alabama that dr. martin luther king, junior marched in 1965. there has been a sharp decline in ticket sales since the san jose chapter of the naacp withdrew support. now to another shocking security breech and this time affecting military men and women from ago -- active duty to veterans. it started popping up other information on his computer. john camp has the details. >> it gave me a different person's name each and every time i came back. >> he says at first he didn't understand and then couldn't believe what he was seeing. >> i was hoping it was a glitch. when i thought about it it i said wait a minute, this is more than a glitch. this is a breech. >> he was on the veterans affair e benefits website

trying to track down his own history for a bank loan, but the site kept displaying other veteran information. both medical and financial. >> but when you click on these hyperlinks here it takes you to the bank account, the direct deposit, the bank account lasts for what bank it is at. >> these are all different people pretty much? >> they are giving them to you. that's a different person also. i bet he has no idea i am sitting here in my house with this information. >> you really shouldn't have ago a success to this information. >> absolutely not. absolutely not. >> he says he called the dod, the v.a. and even senator hagan's office, but didn't get a response until the website went down and an e-mail from the dod came in asking him to scam the few pages that needed to be printed out and e-mail them over. he works with internet privacy issues and says that could pose another breech and says a better place to find answers would be on his computer. >> i don't want them to take my system.

suspicious accounts. a dangerous new trend across the country involving a popular candy. kids are snorting crushed smartees, the multi colored disks of sugar. it is all over youtube and it can have harmful effects. >> anytime you snort or inhale a substance into your lungs that is not supposed to be can be hazardous to your health. >> some of the side effects include scarring of the nasal cavity and infection. an amazing story from space tonight. they have been in hibernation for the last three years. it is scheduled to wake up in a few hours. they will then chase down a comet racing toward the sun. they will drop a small robot to gather samples. it is time for a check on our weather and what is ahead this week. leigh glaser has that for us. >> just a few cut pell changes. i will tell you that a high fire danger will ramp up as we get into the offshore winds.

at least for tonight we are seeing clear skies and a little bit of the high clouds on live doppler 7hd headed in our direction. so in some locations tomorrow morning you may see a little bit of an over cast. it is clear in downtown san francisco and it is starting to cool off, san jose at 49 degrees. in the north bay, we already mentioned some 30s there. so bundle up, 38 in nap paw and pet petaluma 37. you are more than likely going see frost in the protected valley areas. overnight a few passing high clouds. a little cooler as we get into tuesday and wednesday and then as we get into thursday and friday the offshore winds will really start to move in. no red flag warnings have been issued for those days yet, but be advised as we get closer what they will probably be issued. overnight lows, cold locations in the north bay with santa rosa getting in the upper

20s to near 30 degrees and concord 304 and 45 for -- concord 34 and 45 for san francisco. the jet stream is still well to the north of the bay area. so that's where the storm track is. this is where we are. and there are some dry air masses. those are some of the clouds moving in. it does look like the high will start to relax a little bit. it will move near the spine of the sierra. this is what will enhance the dry winds from land to sea and compressing close to the surface. we will look for temperatures to start to warm back up on thursday and friday. and these are dry winds. that is definitely what could prop those red flag warnings the latter part of the workweek. until then minor fluctuation in temperatures. tomorrow highs much like today. look for midto upper 60s in the inland locations. livermore 69. 70s in the north bay, santa

kap coughed it up and had two interceptions and it was unusual for all of us to see. >> it was unusual, but it happens. we can't point our fingers at kaepernick. he played hard. as you can see he did tremendous things out there that helped his team advance to the next level. he made mistakes and we all make mistakes. when it comes to pointing fingers we have to point fingers at the team. we are all in it together. it is no one's fault. >> he ran for over a hundred yards and actually no one was involved. he carried the team with the defense in the first half. >> he did. he is a great player. he is a great player. he has a lot of room to grow and be even better. so i'm excited about his future. i'm just looking forward to next season. >> you had the feeling for

navarro bowman. that injury was tough for everybody to watch. >> yeah, i had an opportunity to talk to navarro and i told him be thankful for what happened. i know it sounds crazy but in times like this, sometimes god is there to put things on you like that. he wants to make sure that you are humble and you are ready for what he is about to give you. you had a great season. you had a great season. sometimes a setback like this can make you a better man with your spirit, your soul, everything. he can make you a better person. >> it was a tough locker room to walk into and it was tough for you afterwards. what does your coach say to you? >> i didn't quite hear what harbaugh said. i was so emotional. we really wanted this. we wanted it bad. i know frank gore, he was pumped before the game.

he knew we were going to win and come out with a victory. we just couldn't pull it off. >> what is tougher, losing in the super bowl last year or losing this game to get into the super bowl this year? >> i am going to have to say losing in the super bowl. when you make it to the big show, the only thing you can think about is winning. when you lose, it is pretty -- you become pretty upset. we have a lot to be excited for. >> so you digest this and you are looking toward next season? >> after the plane ride back to santa clara, i think i will be okay. i will be okay. just need time to really think about it and put it in the past and move on and look forward to the future. >> you had a fabulous year. we want to thank you for your insights and your honesty brrrr everything and it has been a lot of fun doing

the street cars and the downtown cable cars will be back in service tomorrow. muni replaced them with buses and shuttles to minimize the potential for damage in the 49ers game. there were no reported problems in the city tonight. a local couple has saved the city of san francisco. but this time from a hefty bill. fill lap thraw pas john and marcia goldman are picking up the tab for miles scott toe fight villains and rescue a damsel in distress. officials say most of the costs involve a sound system and video screen. and ahead, the fallout from california's drought and how it could be affecting your health. and the return of the polar vortex. >> and we'll take a look at that national map and show you how cold it will be tomorrow

reporting an increase of cases of whooping cough. there were 700 more cases of per pertussis in 2013 than 2012. it is a highly contagious respiratory disease that

affects babies young children. health officials think the increase is because children who were vaccinated failed to get a follow-up booster shot. if you have been sniffling and sneezing you may not have a cold. the bay area's warm winter means you may be suffloking from allergy -- be suffering from allergies. as jonathon bloom found out, you are not alone. >> just a typical winter day. people are out jogging in shorts and t-shirts in the green of san francisco's panhandle. a little too green. >> my husband and i have been having severe allergies lately, and we are not exactly sure. >> post nasa drip. pollen allergies. >> pollen allergies in january. >> they may sneeze a lot and eyes get itchy and then they realize this is not a cold. this is hayfever. >> she runses advanced allergy solutions. a holistic practice in san francisco.

>> we -- she suspects unusually high pollen levels is the culprit behind a blood of early hayfever complaint. >> you will see that in spring. however, because of the weather we are seeing it in january this year. >> what does it look like? >> an itchy throat. >> a lot of coughing. my eyes have been sensitive and tired and dry. >> runny nose and sneezing a lot in the morning. >> but what may be most troubling is some experts say it is not a fluke. it may be the most extreme example of something that's been going on for awhile. >> over the past four years each year there is an increase. >> and this year more than ever she is seeing patients from outside the city. a lot of patients from the east bay and the south bay because they are warmer down there. >> and leftover stress can make allergies worse. >> when our immune system is stressed we become more susceptible to the increased amounts of pollen in the air. >> do this. >> drink enough water and a lot of throat coat tea.

>> and just in case. >> i have to have a tissue in my pocket. >> in san francisco, jonathon bloom, abc7 news. >> it may be warm and dry here, but a new arctic blast is heading down from the north and much of the country is about to get very cold again. here is clayton sandell. >> call it polar vortex, the sequel. bitter arctic air gearing up to take another cold swing at the midwest and northeast. dangerous sub zero and freezing temperatures will stretch south all the way to florida. it could bring more trouble like this massive pile up that shutdown an interstate in indiana sending four to the hospital. drivers are slipping off roads from iowa to new hampshire. state troopers are busy with at least 50 crashes. in massachusetts plows and shovels helping dig out from half a foot of heavy snow. they say this cold snap won't be as brutal, but still --
